Recommended computer configuration

Image analysis programs are extremely demanding on computer resources (more than a word processor for example), so it is a bad idea to use an old computer for this type of application. Most computers sold today (2002) have the minimal power to run our software. Although a minimum configuration can work, you will gain a lot in productivity by adding some little extras.

  • Processor: Pentium III (or equivalent from AMD’s) or more. It is the component that is the most critical for RHIZO Tron productivity. It is never too fast.
  • Memory (RAM): 64 MBytes minimum (128 MB is okay, but 256 MB will be appreciated especially when analysing many, large or color images). It is important is to avoid using virtual memory which slows down the analysis speed by factors of 1000 or more. Virtual memory is dedicated space on a hard disk that is used as temporary holder when there is not enough RAM. When it is used, you can hear the hard disk access noise frequently during the analysis. During its use, time is wasted in transfering RAM content to and from the hard disk rather than analysing the image.
  • Screen: A large screen (17” or +) is recommended. The larger the screen and the RAM, the more images you can view and work on simultaneously and the larger the images can be. You spend less time scrolling to view the images and their analysis with a large monitor. A portrait mode screen is better adapted than a landscape one for analysing whole tube images with the TRON MF version.
  • Video card: A good 2D video card with 32 or 64 MByrtes of video RAM is recommended. The larger the screen the larger must be the video RAM to display all the original images colors. No need for 3D acceleration.
  • Hard disk: This component is not important as images are not kept after analysis. If you want to keep the images you should look for a backup system like a CD or DVD writer which can store for long term large quantities of data at a lower cost.
  • Operating system: Windows 98, ME, NT, 2000, XP and Vista (32 bits)
